Engaging Explainer Video for Online Self-Learning Platform
Project Background

Purpose
This explainer video was meticulously crafted to introduce a pioneering online self-learning platform aimed at professional youth and social workers. The platform offers invaluable insights into the digital facets and opportunities inherent in their field.

Target Audience
The video is tailored for professional youth workers eager to understand the utility and functionality of the new self-learning platform.

Key Message
The core message of the video underscores the significance and methodology of utilizing the self-learning platform to enhance digital competencies in youth and social work.
Client and Project Scope

Client
The client was "LKJ," a government organization. Specifically, the project was managed by a division called "jugend@bw," which focuses on digital work with children and youth, as well as social work for young people.

Scope & Timeline
The video was to be no longer than 3 minutes. The entire project timeline was about 20 days, with my contributions planned for 10 to 15 workdays.
Concept and Pre-production

Initial Concept
The foundation of the concept was built through two calls with the project partners, including representatives from jugend@bw and my colleague Oliver Koll. Oliver then crafted the initial concept and treatment based on our discussions.

Speaker Script & Storyboard Development
The voice-over script underwent several revisions to ensure precision, as the tone and clarity of the script were crucial for effective communication. Layout recordings of the script were made to gauge the timing and flow, ensuring the video remained within the 3-minute limit. After the script was approved, I translated the text into a storyboard, balancing abstraction with concrete visual representation.
Production Process

Illustration & Animation Approach
Following storyboard approval, I developed a style frame to set the visual style for the project. Given the inclusion of characters in the video, I focused on detailed character illustration. The color scheme adhered to the corporate identity of jugend@bw, with slight adjustments for shading.

Unique Techniques & Software
All scenes were created in Adobe Illustrator, leveraging seamless integration with Adobe After Effects. The plugin "Overlord" from Battle Axe facilitated a smooth workflow between these programs. For some scenes, I used self-photographed poses as references for illustration.

Reference photo and animated result

Screen recordings were done using QuickTime Player and edited to match the speaker's tempo. Additional plugins such as "Rubber Hose 3," "Schmeer," and "Void" from Battle Axe, among others, were utilized to enhance the animation process.
Sound Design & Final Audio Mix
I curated a music playlist on Premiumbeat.com, selecting three potential tracks for client approval. After finalizing the voice-over and music, I focused on sound effects, using sample libraries to create an immersive audio experience. The final audio mix was produced using Ableton Live and mastered with iZotope Ozone for high-quality results.
Challenges and Solutions

Main Challenges
The primary challenge was to create a product that effectively promoted the platform and communicated its benefits in an engaging and approachable manner, given the relatively dry subject matter.

Overcoming Challenges
Through open and respectful communication, we established a positive working environment that facilitated mutual understanding and patience. This collaborative atmosphere allowed us to infuse the film with personality and charm while maintaining accuracy and depth.
Client Collaboration

Communication & Supervision
Communication with the clients was respectful and trustful. Initial calls were essential for addressing questions, brainstorming ideas, and aligning expectations regarding animation capabilities, effort, and budget. We used frame.io for direct, time-stamped feedback, enhancing the review process.

Feedback & Revisions
The voice-over script underwent several revisions until all parties were satisfied. The client's positive reaction to the first style frame and animation preview was a significant affirmation of our mutual understanding and collaboration.
Outcome and Impact

Final Outcome
The resulting video successfully balanced informative content with engaging visuals and sound, achieving a blend of education and entertainment.

Client & Audience Reception
The clients were thrilled with the final video and proud of the outcome.
